There was no burst of blood or even a clean snap. The neck was still in his mouth. He could feel a pulse on his tongue. The hen was terrified; he could feel that in the legs. But he didn舗t want to terrify the bird舒he wasn舗t a cruel man. He just wanted to bite its head off and hold his mouth under its headless neck. But he knew: he didn舗t have it in him. He wasn舗t a vampire or a werewolf. And he needed a filling舒he could feel that. I was biting the head oţ a chicken, Doctor. He舗d put the hen down now and get back over the wall.

I舗m not into rubber myself (too sweaty), but you can舗t deny it makes a terrific insulator. By now you may have gathered舒I舗m a night person. Daylight rather cramps my style; and besides, fire needs a night sky to show to best advantage. An evening in the Red Room, playing piano and eyeing the girls, then downtown for rest and recreation. Not a scene that my brother frequents; and so it was with some surprise that I ran smack into him that night, as I was checking out the nicely flammable back streets of the Upper East Side, humming 舠Light My Fire舡 and contemplating a spot of arson.

2. NOW IN THEIR TWENTIES the brothers rarely saw each other. Never spoke on the phone. Eddie Waldman graduated from law school. Edward Waldman continued to live at home. Eddie excelled, recruited by a prominent New York City law firm. 舡 The father divorced the mother, abruptly and mysteriously it seemed for the father, too, had a 舠real舡 life elsewhere. Eddie entered politics, under the tutelage of a prominent conservative politician. Edward, suffering spinal pain, spent most days in a wheelchair.
